Miami July 8th, ECHO participants meet for the first time and prepared for their journey. It was the10th when we finally set foot on the continent of South America, arriving at the Asuncion airport around midnight. We also stepped into a new season, winter, since we are now below the equator. The Echo teams began their new day while aboard their chartered bus headed for Gran Hotel del Paraguay. Orientation took place in the morning with an introduction to Dr. Jim Connett. Lunch was on our own with various groups adventuring in different directions. Las flores salvejas and friends discovered de Paloma restaurant that served wonderful traditional vegetable pies and baked breads. We were able to order meals with the help of a local young woman who spoke good English and could translate for us. The friendly folks of Asuncion made us feel welcome if not at home.

Excited about our first day in Paraguay, we explored our hotel and met some new friends. Our first friend, Baby, is right at home in one of the hotel courtyards.

We caught some Echoers monkeying around with their new friends during a break in orientation.

Exotic South American flowers drew others to their nectar!

In the afternoon the group listened to their first guest speaker, Erwin Bodega, President of PARATESOL (teachers of English to teachers of other languages) who talked to us about the educational system in Paraguay and the importance of English fluency and job security.

The Echo group was cordially invited to attend their annual conference which begins later this week..

Now that we are getting to know each other, we are anticipating what will hatch next! How about you?
