CECsst.233 TITLE: MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD AUTHOR: Janice Steib, West Jefferson High; Morrero, Louisiana GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 9-12 World Geography OVERVIEW: With the use of music, students will identify the geographic theme of location and its major characteristic. OBJECTIVE(s): Students will enhance listening skills by identifying locations on the audio tape. Students will also develop additional knowledge of location by selecting and marking exact sites on a globe. MATERIALS/RESOURCES: Tapeplayer, tape of "We Didn't Light the Fire" by Billy Joel, globes, atlases, world maps, sticky dots ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Students get into groups of two. Listen to the tape and list all the locations mentioned. Be sure to include the names of countries, states, cities, rivers, etc. Mark all the locations on a map of the world or place sticky dots on a globe. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: Students should be able to locate: Afghanistan, Alabama, Arabia, Belgium, Britain, Brooklyn, Budapest, California, China, Congo, Dien Bien Phu, Disneyland, England, Iran, Kwai, Lebanon, Little Rock, North Korea, Old Miss, Panmunjon, Palestine, Russia, South Korea, South Pacific, Suez, Woodstock, Bay of Pigs. If they are having a hard time, you might want to supply them with a list that has only the first and last letter of the locations (A---------n). A further challenge would be to identify the capitals of the countries and states mentioned in the song. Evaluation can be based on the number of locations identified.
