CECmisc.87 TITLE: Home Run Review AUTHOR: Betty Haile, Central Mid High School; Norman, Oklahoma GRADE LEVEL: Elementary - 12 OVERVIEW: This activity can put spark into an otherwise dreary review session. Students enjoy the chance to get up and move around while still learning. it makes reviewing more fun. OBJECTIVE: To review material for a test or to go over any other amount of material. PURPOSE: To review material (daily or test material) RESOURCES/MATERIALS: Previously taught lesson(s). ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Students will play a game of baseball to review material for a test. Students will move around 4 bases to achieve a home run. The bases are for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Home. They may be paper, mats, etc., placed on the floor or desks or chairs placed in a baseball diamond formation. Students are divided into 2 teams and come up to bat in random or sequential order as decided by the teacher (pitcher). A question is asked of the student at home plate. A correct answer results in a hit and the student moves to 1st base. An incorrect answer results in an out. Subsequent questions with correct answers allow the students to move around the bases until each reaches home plate and scores a run. An 8 or 10 "run=rule" is used if one side seems to dominate all the correct answers. If a question is answered incorrectly, the opposing team has a chance to make a double out if one of them can answer it correctly. This also keeps the other team attentive and involved. Play continues as each team comes up to bat and scores or earns outs until all questions are asked. Missed questions may be asked a second time after all others have been asked. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: My students enjoy this method of reviewing for tests. They are allowed to move their muscles instead of remaining in their seats all hour. The movement seems to help them to remember the material. Caution: they may have so much fun cheering each other on that you have to close your door.
