TITLE:  Equivalent Fractions Game

GRADE LEVEL:  7-9

OVERVIEW:  This game is used to teach students about
fractions.  It can also be played using decimals and
percentages.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS:  The Cards:  The deck is made up of 42
cards, each card bearing one fraction.
Make two cards of each of the following:
1/2, 1/4, 2/3, 3/2, 3/5, 5/4, and 1/5.

Make one card each of:
6/12, 3/6, 4/8, 8/16, 4/16, 3/12, 2/8, 6/24, 8/12, 10/15,
6/9, 4/6, 18/12, 9/6, 12/8, 24/16, 6/10, 12/20, 9/15, 15/25,
10/8, 15/12, 20/16, 30/24, 3/15, 4/20, 2/10, and 5/25.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
Objective:
To be the first to get two "books".  Each person (four
players) deals six cards.  A "book" is composed of three
cards:  one card with a fraction reduced to lowest terms;
two cards with fractions equivalent to the fraction reduced
to lowest terms.

Play:
After begin dealt six cards, the players look at them to see
if they have any equivalent fractions.  If they do, put them
together.  The players take turns drawing and discarding
cards until one person gets two books.  As a player
completes a book, he must lay it on the table, face up. Play
continues until one person collects two books.  The winner
is the person who first collects two books.
