CEClang.94 TITLE: FAMILY FEUD AUTHOR: Linda Kramer, Central Mid High School; Norman, OK GRADE LEVEL / SUBJECT: 9th grade Advanced English, but could be modified for use in almost any secondary classroom. OVERVIEW: This activity provides students with an enjoyable way to review specific material before the unit test or final project. PURPOSE: Traditional review sheets or review lectures leave most students (and teachers) cold. By using a "game show" format, everyone enjoys reviewing the content. OBJECTIVES: Students play the game "Family Feud" with a few modifications in order to review material studied during the Romeo and Juliet unit. RESOURCES / MATERIALS NEEDED: A couple of buzzers or bells. ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES: Students are divided up into two "family" teams: the Capulets and the Montagues. The teacher, who serves as the game show host and score keeper, asks specific questions based on the students' study of the play. A buzzer or a simple bell-hop type bell is passed down the row from student to student. When each question is asked, the family member who rings first gets to answer. If the answer is correct, the family gets the points. If not, the other family gets a chance to answer. The game continues until all the questions are asked and answered. Any questions that were not answered correctly during the game can be reviewed when the game ends. The team with the bigger score wins. These points can be extra credit, to be applied to the unit test the next day. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: Using game shows to review material the day before a unit test is a great way to involve all students, give a few extra points, and de-stress the class. It works so well that I have used other game shows for other units, such as "The Newly-Wed Game" for Taming of the Shrew and "Jeopardy" for other literature units.
